We're here to help people living with HIV take control of their health

“The [ACON] volunteer is excellent; he gets here early and gets me enough food for the whole week. I can depend on him.”
- Simon

ACON was established in the 1980s in response to the AIDS crisis and now, more than 35 years, providing programs and services in HIV care and support remains a core part of our work.

One of those programs is our regular Meal Service. Operating since the early days of the epidemic, the Meal Service provides vulnerable members of our communities who are living with HIV access to food and provisions, as well as much-needed social support and interaction.

The Meal Service has provided support to thousands of people living with HIV over the years – among them Simon, a 90-year-old Sydney man and long-time attendee of the luncheon.

Last year, when Sydney was forced into lockdown as a result of the pandemic, the Meal Service transitioned to takeaway and home delivery. During this time, ACON staff and volunteers commenced checking in with people who frequented the Meal Service to make sure they had enough food, medication and other needs.

Simon was always independent so accepting at-home visits and support was not an easy thing for him to be open to. However, he eventually received support with an ACON volunteer dropping off food and other necessities to Simon’s home. During the height of the lockdown, Simon received further support with his shopping needs and he was provided with cooked meals. Today, he receives ongoing support with his grocery shopping.

Of the thousands of people who have utilised ACON’s Meal Service over the years, Simon’s is only one story. The experience of each person living with HIV is different, as can be their support needs.

The Meal Service is funded through ACON’s fundraising efforts and with this year’s Tax Appeal, we’re asking you to help us continue to make differences in the lives of people living with HIV, and to help us provide the support that has become so important to people like Simon.
